Daydreambeliever aka. George

Hey y'all,

a couple of years ago, I kept a diary in a forum (not saying which  :P ) keeping track of my progress.
It helped me on my way and I received a lot of good advice back then.
My plan is to buy a handpan somewhere as soon as March, at the latest June and from then on, I'll try to take an hour a day for practice.
My ideas will then be recorded and put on a separate Youtube channel, which I will post here.

So...what's to say about me?
I was born in Aachen, a city close to the border to the Netherlands and Belgium and spent my childhood in a smaller city nearby.
My dad and mum were divorced fairly early because they are quite different people.
My mum is a friendly and rooted soul with a strong urge for security and social acceptance whereas my dad always has been a wanderer and restless soul.
He's from South Africa and when he was a young man he got between the lines of apartheid and the black community.
So he left South Africa in the late 70's and spent his years as a busker, playing saxophone to cassettes in the streets of Spain and Italy (maybe someone has seen him.
So this is him: http://musicmap.co.za/jonathan-townsend/
And here's a video of what he has been doing lately before returning to South Africa in 2012: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyKZqfj_X0w

I grew up as a single child being raised by my mum as a single mother and when puberty came, I grew impatient with the restrictions of normal life and school.
So what did i do? I ran away and spent the next four years of my life playing drums in the streets with my dad and his wife.
We had a car in which we slept and changed cities every day.
My drums consisted of Hihat, Snaredrum and 18" Rototom all of which were mounted on a hand truck.

Some music here: http://thetownsends.de/George/Strassenmusik/Die_Musik.html

Anyway... after a lot of stuff happened, I came back to Germany and caught up on my education.
During that time I played in a 70s psychedelic band with two (!!!) Hammonds.
Check it out here: http://thetownsends.de/George/One_Hand_ ... Musik.html

After I had my certificates, I went to the german army.
One year later, I went to school again and besides vocational training, I did my a-levels and went to university (training to be a teacher for German & English).
Here's some music that I did in between:

Fast forward to 2014:
My wife got a job in a school in Berlin and we moved here.
I also decided that I would save money for my first handpan (I'm about half way now).
So before things get started, I thought I might just give you some insight into a couple of ideas of mine.

In 2016, we're planning to travel down to South Africa again and we'll visit this one cave in Oudshorn.
It is one of the oldest caves where humans have lived in and it's filled with drawings of our ancestors.
In the main room of the cave, there is a stage where they used to have concerts but have closed down that because visitors would get lost and damage the formations.

So here's the plan: I contacted the tourist information and they (kind of) agreed to let me play a handpan in there.
I'd want to record (Zoom H4, 2 Microphone, 2 GoPro Cameras) that and if that is any good, I'd upload that to Youtube for the world to enjoy.
So... another idea for a video.
I live in Berlin Tegel, close to the Tegler See.
It's this place:

So, there's a boat rental and my plan is to rent a boat and go to the middle of that lake and film me playing some handpan.
There are more ideas for visuals.

Anyway, there are also some ideas concerning playing handpan as well: time signatures (5/4, odd time, etc.) and polyrhythms need to be explored but that doesn't make too much sense to talk about right here - explorations will follow.

Anyway, let me quickly talk about my equipment:
I own a Zoom H4N (+ two microphones, budget ones from Thomann, but they suited me well when recording the drums).
I'm also getting a Polaroid Cube for videos (I find the design quite suitable for this kind of endeavour).
With this setup I think that I'll be equipped for most of the acoustical & visual vibes that I am thinking of.

So you see, I don't even have a handpan and I'm already full of plans

I have been offered a used prototype handpan at a very reasonable price and I couldn't resist the urge to go for it.

To me it sounds good. No weird tones or anything (at least in the video).
So, this will be my first handpan for the time being until I have saved up the money for my Aciel.
Then maybe I'll keep both, maybe not. Who knows? Life's good :)

So here's the unboxing video

The weather was grey and cold today but it wasn't raining at least. So I went for a walk and played a little song to the ducks.

So I had this little song I had lying around which I made 2012 in South Africa.
I thought I'd give it a spin... not sure how well it turned out though...
Anyway... it's a learning process, right?

As an explanation: I tried to incorporate a west african rhythm into the fairly straight beat of the backing track... anyway... it kind of like it.
I'm not sure whether I'm completely satisfied with it.

So I put my two polymetric party together and tried to stich them together into a song (i added a little non-polymetric cross section in the middle to make it a little more interesting).
Anyway, enjoy and tell me what you think about it :)

So much for now. Cheers.

Whilst trying to work on a tricky pattern (thanks John, you c"n&, I came upon this nice little jive and I thought this might be something for the beginners... It's tricky little fucker but at the end, but once you get used to it, it's nice and smooth... give it a try  :)

So here's some new stuff from me again.
I went to Aachen the other day to write yet another exam and I was asked to play at a urban gardening project, as they were looking for musicians to play at their summer festivities.
So, I just said yes  :D

Very nice.  I like the rhythmic approach you used in this video.
